Vietnam’s Export Products to the EU

After the impact of the Covid pandemic, global purchasing demand has been recovering, leading to a steady increase in Vietnam’s exports to the EU. However, many experts note that this is a “high-standard” market with strict regulations on customs procedures and consumer health protection. Therefore, to ensure full compliance with EU requirements, businesses should choose a reputable export service provider, such as 3W Logistics.

From packaging and preservation to customs procedures and transportation, 3W Logistics meets current European standards effectively, helping shipments clear customs quickly and smoothly.

1. Agricultural and seafood products

According to statistics, Vietnam’s agricultural exports to Europe have been growing positively at a rate of 20%–30% per year, with no limitation on product categories or volume. In addition, since the EVFTA came into effect, Vietnam’s key agricultural products, including pepper, cashew nuts, coffee, tea, rice, rubber, and fruits & vegetables, have also enjoyed highly preferential tariff rates. Specifically:

Coffee: The EU is Vietnam’s largest coffee export market, accounting for more than 34.8% of total export turnover. Major markets include Germany (USD 377 million), Italy (USD 205 million), Spain (USD 119 million), and Belgium (USD 97 million). In addition, HS code 21011110 (instant coffee) is among the most favored by EU consumers, with export turnover exceeding USD 60 million.

Cashew nuts: According to statistics, Europe is the second-largest import market for Vietnamese cashew nuts (after the United States), with a total value of USD 734 million, equivalent to 122 thousand tons, up more than 15.2% in both volume and value.

Rubber: In 2021, rubber exports to the EU reached approximately 100 thousand tons, equivalent to USD 175 million, up 33.7% in volume and 72.6% in value compared to the same period in 2020. Among EU member states, Vietnamese rubber was mainly imported by Germany (USD 62 million), Italy (USD 25 million), Spain (USD 22 million), and the Netherlands (USD 17 million).

Fruits and vegetables: When the EVFTA officially took effect, 94% of 547 tariff lines on fruits, vegetables, and processed products (lychee, longan, rambutan, dragon fruit, pineapple, watermelon) were eliminated immediately. As a result, in the first 11 months of 2021, export turnover from Vietnam to the EU reached USD 173 million, up 7.6% compared to the same period in 2020.

Pepper: A report from Vietnam Customs shows that EVFTA incentives helped Vietnam’s pepper exports to Europe exceed 40 thousand tons, equivalent to USD 165 million, up 7.4% in volume and 63.9% in value.

Rice: Although not a staple food in Europe, the EU still has a certain demand for nutritious and health-friendly rice products. Along with the EVFTA taking effect, Vietnam’s rice exports to the European market are no longer subject to tariffs. As a result, in 2021, Vietnam exported around 54 thousand tons of rice, equivalent to USD 38 million, up 21.6% in value compared to the same period in 2020.

Tea: Vietnam is one of the leading countries exporting tea products to the EU, with major destinations including Poland (USD 1 million), Germany (USD 601 thousand), and Belgium (USD 410 thousand).

2. Textile and garment products

Textiles and garments are among Vietnam’s exports to the EU that have achieved remarkable growth, thanks to the 0% tax reduction policy under the EVFTA. Data from the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) shows that export turnover of Vietnam’s textile and garment products to Europe granted EUR.1 C/O reached USD 216 million in August 2020 and continued to record over USD 199 million in Q1 2021.

3. Iron and steel products

The EVFTA has opened a “highway” for Vietnamese steel to penetrate deeper into all 27 EU member markets, with unexpectedly strong growth. Accordingly, Europe has risen to become the second-largest importer of Vietnamese steel, with “massive” increases in both volume and value.

Specifically, export volume increased by 532% to 1.63 million tons, while export value exceeded USD 1.9 billion, up 845% in Q1 2022.

4. Footwear products

Footwear is another product group that must be mentioned when answering the question of what Vietnam exports to the EU. Since the EVFTA took effect, Vietnam’s footwear exports to Europe have recovered significantly despite the complicated pandemic situation there.

Statistics from the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) from August 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020, show that Vietnam’s footwear exports granted EUR.1 C/O reached USD 1.37 billion. In Q1 2021, this figure increased by another USD 1.17 billion, accounting for 98.98% of total export turnover.

Among EU member markets, Vietnam’s footwear exports all recorded strong growth, with some countries reaching double-digit increases, such as Belgium up 37.0%, the Netherlands up 23.4%, Italy up 14.3%, and Spain up 39.2%.

5. Computers, electronic products, and components

Vietnam’s exports to the EU such as computers, electronics, and components play a key role in the national economy. By Q3 2021, exports of computers and components continued to grow positively despite supply shortages in Europe. Specifically, total export value reached USD 4.8 billion, up more than 20% compared to the previous year.

In EU member countries such as the Netherlands, exports of computers, electronic products, and components increased sharply (USD 1.2 billion, 187 times higher than the same period in 2020, when it was only USD 6.6 million). Meanwhile, Slovakia reached USD 764.5 million, up 47.2%, and the Czech Republic reached USD 131 million, up 109.3%.

6. Machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts

Machinery and equipment are the final answer to the question of what Vietnam exports to the EU. According to Vietnam Customs, from the beginning of the year to May 15, Vietnam achieved USD 116.8 billion in exports of tools, spare parts, and machinery equipment to Europe, up 30.9% (equivalent to an increase of USD 27.57 billion) compared to the same period in 2021.

Notably, export turnover of this product group to EU member countries such as Germany increased strongly, reaching USD 452.4 million, up nearly 128% (equivalent to an increase of nearly USD 254 million) compared to April 2021.

Thus, based on Vietnam’s export products to the EU, it can be concluded that Europe is a highly potential market for Vietnamese goods. At the same time, however, it is also a demanding market with complicated customs procedures, strict origin requirements, and food hygiene and safety regulations. After the impact of the Covid pandemic, many businesses believe that logistics operations must also be prioritized for improvement.
